A Sanctuary by the Sea

Bay Point Landing occupies a 103-acre inlet along Oregon’s South Coast. Dense forest surrounds the property, while more than a mile of secluded beachfront opens toward Coos Bay. The design team shaped Bay Point Landing as a private coastal retreat. At the same time, the destination gives visitors opportunities to gather and connect with the sea.

Moreover, the site’s organization recalls the area’s riparian history. Marsh islands once formed between streams flowing toward the lagoon. Therefore, the design uses small clusters to reflect this natural pattern. Overall, the project develops 40 acres of the larger property. It includes 100 RV camping spaces and 100 camp cabins. Together, these elements preserve open space while revealing the landscape’s character.

Reclaiming the Landscape

Years of sawmill operations left bark waste across the property. Consequently, the reclaimed land could not support traditional foundations or large buildings.

A Network of Communal Camps

Instead of forcing a single structure onto the site, the team introduced a network of smaller camps. This approach responds directly to the ground conditions. Moreover, it creates intimate gathering areas throughout the landscape.

A central pavilion connects the different camps. In addition, it provides year-round amenities for guests. This shared destination encourages activity during every season.

A Clubhouse on the Marsh

Framing the Horizon

The wood-and-glass clubhouse stands between the camps and the waterfront. A series of piers lifts the structure above the marshland. As a result, the building touches the sensitive landscape lightly.

Angled roofs draw inspiration from local seaside huts. Likewise, their forms echo the marsh islands across the property. Each roof rises in two directions and guides the eye toward the building’s center.

Large windows capture views across the bay. Meanwhile, full-height glass reveals diagonal wood bracing throughout the interior. The structural rhythm frames the horizon and gives the clubhouse a distinctive identity.

A Lasting Coastal Retreat

Bay Point Landing combines hospitality, recreation, and environmental sensitivity. Ultimately, the smaller structures maintain the site’s open character while supporting year-round use.

The project also creates a direct relationship between architecture and landscape. As visitors move through the property, they encounter shifting views of the forest, marshland, and bay.

Together, the cabins, camps, and clubhouse form a cohesive coastal destination. The retreat invites guests to slow down, gather, and experience the natural beauty of Coos Bay.
